Due WED (04/18) before 11:59pmYou must do ODT14 before posting here. If you haven't done it yet, go do it before posting your RD4 here. RD4 Prompt: Identify FIVE forms of power that is interacting between A and B. Party A is either going to be Facebook or the NRA. Party B is "us". Write two body paragraphs on each form of power. You should have TEN body paragraphs total. Include in each body paragraph an authoritative source that backs up your point about how and why each form of power is flowing one way or another. INTRO: Define power. Fully describe either the NRA or Facebook and why it is such a powerful entity in our society. Define "us" in relation to whichever entity you chose (NRA or FB). [Does "us" mean everyone in Texas? Everyone in schools? Just "us" students/young people? Everyone in the United States of America? Everyone in the frikkin world? Who exactly will you be referring to when you talk about "us" in your essay?] BP1-2: Two paragraphs on a form of power that flows between NRA/FB and us. One paragraph on how it flows from NRA/FB to us. One paragraph on how it flows from us to NRA/FB. BP3-4: Two more paragraphs on another form of power. BP5-6: Rinse and repeat. BP7-8: Rinse and repeat. BP9-10: Rinse and repeat. CONC: What you've learned from trying to identify forms of power in two of the most powerful entities in the world. Are there any corrections that need to be made in how much power is flowing in one direction or another (be careful, keep it short and sweet here since any entire other essay could be written on this question). :) REMEMBER: YOU CANNOT use the form of power that is "money". Get away from the idea that Facebook/the NRA has all the power and "we" have none. Each body paragraph (BP) needs to discuss how power moves from Facebook/the NRA to us and then how power moves from us to Facebook/the NRA. For example (since I took "money" off the table, I'll use that as an example):
* Do you see how I talked about the flow of money going back and forth between us and the NRA? Here, I'll do it with Facebook now.

Due MON (03/26) by 11:59pm.A Proposal to the COM Board of Directors: This assignment is about as real as it gets. But first, before you propose anything to anyone, you need to make sure you have solid ground to stand on. By now, you should have discussed with your classmates sufficiently as to what might be some VIABLE options for improving some aspect of COM. The essential aspects you must cover in the RD3 for full credit (aka in the real world, earn respect enough for your proposal to be considered) are:
Required Technical Formatting:
Slide show of your classmates' suggestions on your stated difficulties. (Tuesday's class)Slideshow of the faux COM Board of Trustees' conclusions on your proposals with their concerns for their hesitations in funding (whether approved or not).Remember that on Tuesday next week, you will be presenting your refutations and pumped up research that will erase the COM-BOT's concerns and hesitations with your amazing stats and factual evidence. Due TUE (02/20) before 11:59pmWhy do we do the things we do? And how do we go about investigating those reasons? Essay Project 2 is about practicing "cultural research" methodologies. The magic word is. . . Answer ONE of the four prompts by researching information on:
In your research, offer FIVE of the most important reasons you can find that explain your one phenomenon that you chose above. Discuss why each of these made it to your top five most important explanations for the prompt you chose. Discuss why our society needs to pay attention to that reason in particular and not all the other ones we're hearing about. Be sure to include cultural evidence for your why that reason is so important. For example, if I were working on a research paper trying to explain why U.S. teens are struggling with low self-esteem, I might write a body paragraph on how U.S. capitalism is eroding youth self-esteem. Cultural evidence for that would be the various commercials out there that focus on preying on young people's insecurities like "Axe" products, "thin snacks", "skinny" fat-free/sugar-free advertising slogans, etc. Be creative with your research! Not only can you look things up on the internet (as well as discover new reliable internet information sources), you can also interview professionals and experts in the appropriate field to hear that people who are actually involved in these phenomena are thinking. If you think about it, a lot of these "experts" in social and national syndicated media, are not even people who talk to teens. Legitimate professionals you could interview are: -high school teachers -high school counselors -high school psychologists -high school administrators -health care professionals involved with teens How to do an interview? Here are some guidelines:
Other great resources for your research:
Here are the results to this morning's class poll on your essay structure. The numbers are a bit variable because sometimes you didn't get a vote either way. Then there were some of you who voted for yourselves and some of you who didn't. Either way is fine since one vote isn't going to skew your data at all. What to do with these numbers? Well check out the number of classmates who DID get at least your thesis argument direction. This is simply an indicator as to how CLEAR your keywords are. If everyone was on target, that doesn't necessarily mean you're good to go since you still need to make sure you're keywords are not only obvious, but also good "anchors" for online researching. Then check out the number of classmates who perceived the opposite. If you got more votes for the opposite of what you were really saying, you should reword your supporting reasons (or come up with entirely newer ones that are even stronger) so that your argument really shines. Don't forget to email me your questions anytime this weekend since your FD1 is due next week! EXTRA CREDIT: If you were dissatisfied with your keyword outline structure that you handed in today, you can POST a revised version here below. Due MON (01/29) by 11:59pm. What is more powerful: language or technology? Choose a specific cultural artifact with a narrative and critically analyze with FIVE supporting reasons as to how this cultural artifact addresses your thesis. Cultural artifacts with narratives that will be accepted as legitimate material to discuss will be:
Anything not on this list must be fully discussed with me before it can be cleared as submission acceptable. Primary components that your RD will be graded on are:
Overall, you must have at least SEVEN complete paragraphs (an intro, five body paragraphs, a conclusion) for an acceptable rough draft. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that clearly articulates your supporting reason. Each body paragraph must have evidence [a specific scene / example OR discussion of your secondary source] that exemplifies your supporting reason. Here is a general outline: I. INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH Thesis Primary source (cultural artifact) II. BODY PARAGRAPH 1 Supporting reason 1 Evidence (either scene or secondary source) Analysis (your discussion of that scene or source) III.
