Due MON (03/26) by 11:59pm.A Proposal to the COM Board of Directors: This assignment is about as real as it gets. But first, before you propose anything to anyone, you need to make sure you have solid ground to stand on. By now, you should have discussed with your classmates sufficiently as to what might be some VIABLE options for improving some aspect of COM. The essential aspects you must cover in the RD3 for full credit (aka in the real world, earn respect enough for your proposal to be considered) are:

1)It is obvious that the Gym at College of the Mainland is in dire need of an update. It is very easy to tell that our gym is outdated. I am not the only person that shares this feeling about our gym. Some of my friends, classmates, and staff also believe that our gym needs an update. Lucky for the board at COM, I have a couple proposals I would like to make. I believe these ideas will definitely help our gym and satisfy the COM students and staff. For one, we definitely need a bigger weight room. We also need more updated equipment. Other issues that need fixing are a better basketball court, bringing back the pool, and a better use for the elliptical room. 2)These upgrades are very needed. At the moment, the gym is not really attracting people. For one, the weight room gets crowded with just three people (literally). Second, the basketball court is always closed due to club meetings (we will get to this later on). The list goes on, but these are the two biggest problems. If any of these upgrade ideas are made into reality, we will see a big difference, and I mean a great difference. If we fix our gym to meet the students’ needs, I know that more people will use the gym. 3)Now, lets get right into the issues. To start off, the basketball courts are always closed because of either club meetings or other events. This is agitating, because the court was built to play in, not to host events. Other students who often use to basketball court share the feeling. My proposition is that, instead of using the basketball for events, there should be a different designated place to host events. This way, us basketball prodigies can still shoot some hoops while club meetings are going on. I have two ideas for the said designated area. The first one is the student center. This would be the perfect area. Currently, the student center has no use with the exception of the COM store. This place would be perfect because it also has plenty of tables and seats for large clubs to meet. The other option would be to get rid of the elliptical room. This room is basically used by no one. This is also a good option; however, it will have to be remodeled and rebuilt. Either one can be used as a meeting room. Other colleges, such as Curry College in Massachusetts, use meeting rooms. That way, there is no interfering between clubs and basketball players. 4)Staying on the topic of basketball courts, we also need a better court. It is currently not a big issue, but an upgrade would not be so bad. For one, we can get some new flooring. We can make the floor more detailed, giving the gym a cooler appeal. It can also use some sweeping. This could make it look cleaner and shinier without substituting it for a newer floor. Maybe we can put our school logo (The Fighting Duck) somewhere on the court. Something else we can fix is the stands. The stands in our gym are pretty old and rusty. They make the gym look pretty bad. We should remove up and add some modern touch. We can make the stands smaller, but more detailed. This will give our gym a better look, again, attracting more people. 5)Another issue is that the pool is no longer in the plans for the gym’s future. Earlier this semester, I attended an event in which the board met with students and faculty to discuss how we can make COM a better place. I asked about what was going to happen to the pool, to which they responded saying that they were planning to shut it down. While this issue really does not pertain to me, many of my fellow classmates (and I am all about my classmates) would like to see the pool stay in the gym. While this issue is probably a little more complicated, there is for sure a solution. One thing that the board can do is to find funding for the pool. COM does get millions in funding already. Maybe the board can use some of this money to keep the pool maintained. This would be appreciated by all the swimmers at COM. 6)Now, on to the next one. The work-out equipment at COM is pretty outdated. Along with being outdated, they are also old, and they are often shut down due to being out of order. We are definitely in need of new equipment. New weight machines are a must have. Some of the current gym equipment can be considered dangerous. Say that you are using a weight machine. All is good, until the machine breaks. Now you have a sprained arm or maybe worse. That is not a pretty outcome. That is why new equipment would be appreciated by the students whom often work out. 7)The final issue is that the weight room is really cramped. It is literally smaller than a regular classroom at COM. What type of gym has a super small weight room? Pretty much every other person I met that uses to weight room can agree with me, and trust me, we are not happy. However, I do have a solution. The size of the gym can be expanded. There are two ways that this can be done. The cardio part of the room can be placed elsewhere in order to expand the weight room. Where would the cardio equi

students with mental health problems can as well. Students struggling with mental health problems along with “counseling and psychiatric care may be necessary to address these real and growing needs, pets can be a valuable adjunct for restoring the emotional equilibrium of troubled students” (Martin). Proof can be found in studies of the latest journals of psychology. As an example in a recent study titled “Animal-Assisted Intervention for trauma: a systematic literature review”, the outcomes were reduced depression, anxiety and among other mental health disorders in which patients experienced trauma. It was concluded that Animal Assisted Intervention was a complementary treatment for trauma (O’Haire). Pet therapy for students with mental health problems is something for the COM board trustees to consider as beneficial in the long run.

Most college students at least work part time. Leaving little time to go sit in the lobby for maybe an hour waiting to be seen with an advisor. There should be a calendar with dates and times for when the advisors are available to see us. This way we can get in ahead of time with no inconvenience for everyone else. It would create a more beneficial catalog for us to follow. Students wouldn’t feel as pressed to remember everything they wanted to ask in such short time. Having a chorological time ling set up for dates and times with students would help them stay more organized. Organization is a big step in getting a career built.

and my brother being one of them I cannot judge. So, I would enforce a special sealed room for those smokers who have to have nicotine throughout the day in order to maintain focus or If that is there way of “chillaxing” then I would allow it because everyone has a different way of “finding chill” and my way is watching Netflix. Man, I simply cannot get enough of watching “the office” on Netflix. I watch before I go to bed everyday it is basically an addiction. Netflix is my type of nicotine LOL. Netflix would be a big part of the chillax room and if you didn’t have an already paid for account, you could just use the “community” username and password and enjoy your show. Money will never be an issue in the chillax room, seeing as it is already one of the biggest issues in the world for majority of people, the chillax room won’t let financial thoughts be a burden.

INTRODUCTION: 1. It has been proven that College of the Mainland is currently undergoing renovations to improve the campus. This is happening because they want to make the learning process more comfortable for the students. The board of directors discussed this problem among each other but they didn’t actually ask the students. What we need is a sensory friendly room. A sensory friendly room is a quiet and relaxing place where students can sleep or do homework. This room is designed to develop a person’s sense with lighting, music and other objects. It can be used as a therapy room by relaxing a person completely. It is also very helpful for those with autism and/or other disabilities. Essentially, this room would be used to do homework, relax and even for taking naps.

SOLUTIONS: 1. A sensory friendly room will help with the students’ grades by providing a place to nap. According to Melissa Locker from Time Magazine, well rested students haves better grades. “Specifically researchers found a link between academic performance and something called sleep efficiency, which is more or less how well you sleep at night.”(Locker). What Locker is saying is that, the amount of sleep a person gets correlates to how well they perform the next day. When a student doesn’t get enough sleep, they tend to be distracted. This also affects their ability to remember and plan. The sensory friendly room can raise the grades of students by giving them a place to study and nap occasionally. 2. Sensory rooms usually cost around 20,000 dollars. In order to fund the sensory friendly room, COM can start a fundraiser. In Steve Odland’s article he gives steps on how to start a fundraiser. “Start by developing your vision and mission… Next you need a name… Differentiate your charity… Write a plan… Start your plan… Fundraising.” (Odland). The COM Board of Directors would announce their plan to see how many people were for it. Depending on how many people liked the idea, COM could start a fundraiser. With the help of Odland’s article and the people who want a sensory room, COM could raise enough money for it. 3.Adelphi University was one of the popular colleges who added a sensory room to their campus. They first were able to fund this by an anonymous donation. After the donation and inspiration to build the room, the college decided to add a fee to the students’ tuition. COM can fund the sensory friendly room by adding a fee to their students’ tuition. Similar to the way COM adds a gym membership fee to the students’ tuition. CONCLUSION: A sensory friendly room would be a great addition to COM. It would greatly help the mental health of the students. As well as boost the student performance rate. Both of these things mean a lot to the COM Board of Directors, so this would be beneficial to the students and staff.

things could potentially happen to them, first if there are spare breakers, to run new circuits to the library and create a charging bar, or if the breakers are not fully loaded, add receptacles to current circuits. The first of these two outcomes mean to use existing breakers to create new circuits to allow for new electrical ports to allow for new charging bar stations. This utilizes the pre-existing systems to allow for a greater degree of charging potential without having to run all new surface cords or a complete demolition. Then the latter of the outcomes entails adding more circuits connections to the existing circuits to utilize the allowance for more current in those systems. This solution while not as potentially inexpensive as my first suggested solution does allow for a reasonable solution for the issue of getting electricity to more sites of the Learning Resource Centers interior and in a much more subtle manner.
