This had to be one of the most ugliest short stories I have ever read, but I'm glad I read it. It seems like it must be a metaphor for something, but I cannot think of what exactly.

Ha! That's a great word for the story - UGLY. Yep, I'd have to say I agree 100% with that. In regards of language and technology - what about the situation Barth and his pseudo-Barths are in. Why are they in that situation? And more importantly, even if they knew what they were getting into, would "Barth" (whoever that actually is) even do anything differently?

1. In Fat Farm, technology is more powerful than language because it has the ability to change personal values, create a society that has an ideal image of its citizens and make a person immortal.
