In America there are more than 41 million teenagers and that number continues to grow every day (United States Census Bureau). The question lies as to why so many teens are struggling with suicide. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Suicide is defined as the death of a person caused by self-directed injurious behavior with intent to die as a result of the behavior. Suicide is the second leading death of teenagers ages fifteen to nineteen (National Institute of Mental Health). U.S. teens are struggling with suicide because of their mental health instability.

a survivor into a well of despair, physical pain, and unrelenting panic and terror. The trauma is too much for young adults to compartmentalize, and mental disorders are a manifested. Teen domestic and sexual abuse survivors are extremely susceptible to suicide because of the trauma they experience is overwhelming. It is plausible that suicide is a form of escape from their living nightmare.

Emotional neglect seems like the most subdued problem of the five, but it is equally harmful when it comes to teen suicide. Neglect takes many forms, "from a parent having unrealistically high expectations or not listening attentively, to invalidating a child's emotional experiences to the point he or she begins to feel self-doubt" (Summers). In one of the many studies conducted over adolescents and parents, the results "indicate that parent-child relationships characterized by valuing parent opinions for serious decisions, feeling able to talk to parents about problems, and perceiving parental caring were associated with more healthy indicators of behavioral and emotional health" (Ackard). Valuing parents' opinions is a contributing factor against unhealthy behavioral and mental health among teenagers. If teenagers do not value their parents' opinions; then, there is a greater risk of mental health problem such as depression and suicide. Emotional neglect from parents is invisible, and that makes it almost always silent to our society. Parents often make the mistake of being to self-absorbed and not paying attention to their teens or in some cases doing the exact opposite and becoming perfectionist to every action their teen desires. (Campbell). The direct result of having parents that are excessively permissive or perfectionist is teenagers do not get positive reinforcement they deserve, and their self-worth deteriorates. Anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem weave together to form the terrible outcome of suicide of teens as the result of a cry for help and attention.

Teen suicide rates are amongst one of the highest leading causes of deaths in our American society today. Social media plays a tremendous role of influencing kids, and not always in the best ways. The media leaves many kids feeling truly hopeless believing suicide is the only choice. Suicide is a confusing subject that many of us don’t truly understand. Social media has a strong impact on everyone in our world today, but its causing teens the most damage.

Numerous bullies don’t understand the effect it can have on their victim's. Cyber bullying leaves so many teens feeling worthless like they have no cause in life. Karen Kaplan said that studies prove, "Victims of bullying were more than twice as likely as other kids to contemplate suicide and about 2.5 times as likely to try to kill themselves, according to a new study that quantifies the emotional effects of being teased, harassed, beaten up or otherwise harmed by one’s peers." Cyber bullying is a serious matter; victim's often feel like they have no other way out but suicide. Teenagers often witness other people getting bullied online but do nothing to defend the victim. Resulting in the teens to feel that no one cares about their well-being. Cyber bulling cases often leads to teenagers deciding suicide is their escape from this pain.

“Almost 100 People Have Called Poison Control for Eating Tide Pods This Year.” Yes, that is a real article headline. This wasn’t from the Onion. That article is from the news outlet, Vice News. U.S. teens eat Tide Pods because it is a trend that started on the internet. If you break it down there are many detailed reasons why American teens eat tide pods. The concept of teenagers consuming Tide Pods demonstrates the powerful influence of the internet and peer pressure.

Bullying mainly happens at schools among teens and children. Children these days are mean. I got bullied to the point at school, where I didn't want to go to school because I was scared to. I believe that nobody should ever get to that point or to the point of taking their own life. I believe that every child has a chance at seeking help even when they don't want help. In the article "Prevention at School" The U.S Department of Health and Human Services" states that, " Bullying can threaten students' physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively

There are many people who made their story known and why they committed suicide public to the world before they did it. Amanda Todd is one of those people that let the world know what she was doing and what was going on before she committed suicide. Amanda Todd was a teen that was being bullied on the internet, which is cyber bullying. In the article "The Story of Amanda Todd" Michelle Dean states, " If she imagined her fame at all she must have felt ambivalent at the prospect. in her short life, Todd had already learned that notoriety had a dark side. a certain kind of fame had already found her, and with it came a certain kind of life she plainly convinced herself that she couldn't escape" (Dean 1). I think that this means that she thought that she was going to become famous and everything was going to be good but it ended up being a negative choice in her favor. In this article it explains her story but i am going to summarize it in my own words to the best of my ability so this article tells the story of what happened with Amanda Todd's Suicide: so she was getting hit on by this guy and she was video chatting and she flashed him and he took a picture of her flashing him and asked her to show him again some other time and then he got mad when she denied him so he sent the picture to people that she knew and made her life a living hell. She then eventually got tired of it and committed suicide because she was getting bullied about it and that guy wouldn't leave her alone. In my opinion this got way too far. I believe she should have seeked help even though she could have gotten into trouble also. I believe she would still be here with us if she would have seeked help. When Amanda posted that video on the internet for everyone to see many people were shocked and overwhelmed about this video. These reactions were some that some people were not expecting as it says in the article, "Teens React to chilling cyber bullying video" Brian Hernandez says "One reaction we were not expecting was the almost Unanimous feeling of apathy and hopelessness from all the teens when it comes to cyber bullying" (Hernandez1). This means that the teens felt sorry for her when they were watching which to me is the way they are supposed to feel but maybe they should have helped her. I believe that someone should have helped her, whether it be someone she is close to or authorities. I believe that someone taking their own life because someone makes their life a living hell is ridiculous to get to that point.

In light of recent events, I feel that it is of the utmost importance to discuss why the young and budding new minds of teens are influenced to become mass murderers. For a while now we’ve known that teens are more likely to take risks than adults and children, but to commit mass murder is a different beast entirely. In more recent years the video games industry has come under attack from politicians as the reason for our youth becoming mass murderers. This claim, while ridiculous, is not a new one. Politicians and prominent people in the media have been making the claim that video games promote a “culture of violence.” What I believe, though, is that teens are not becoming mass murderers because of video games but instead are becoming mass murderers due to the leniency of gun laws in the United States.

handgun, but after a couple of minutes of background checks, an 18-year-old can legally buy an AR-15 with ammo and magazines, according to New York Times. This hypothetical that I’ve just laid out is exactly what happened when 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz bought an AR-15 in around 5 minutes flat the same day as the shooting. So, not only can the extremely young legally own a firearm but they also can obtain it an astoundingly short amount of time. This to me speaks volumes about how much of a dire state our gun laws are in and how much we need to reform them. All of this is pretty damning without even considering how much the gun attachment laws are almost equally in a sorry state.

by this is that a contributing factor to why we, as a people are unwilling to act and protect our citizens from shootings, is because of the ideology of the gun in American culture. This ideology of gun ownership is rooted in our history as Americans from the very inception of its birth. We learn that our country was created through hard-fought battles to give its future citizens the liberties they deserve life, liberty, property, and gun ownership. It’s this pride that guns have contributed to our national history that fuels the ideology of gun ownership today. So when an American that has owned a gun for years and knows that its one of the fundamental principles his potential forefathers fought and died to protect has that threatened to be taken away it's not hard to imagine why he might get a little defensive. It's because it's so ingrained into the American psyche that at this point the idea of the gun has been transformed into a myth, a Myth of The Gun. This myth, however, is in direct conflict with the very real issues that are plaguing our nation today skewing public perception of what a gun really is. This idea is supported by Fordham Political Review’s Ben St. Clair when he states that, “The right to bear arms has reached this realm of myth and ideology. Former National Rifle Association (NRA) president Charlton Heston’s ability to evoke the fears and triumphs associated with threats to the American homeland and its liberty — from the Revolutionary War to Japan’s assault on Pearl Harbor — and re-appropriate their significance to a “struggle” over gun rights reflects the power of the American myth that connects guns and freedom” What he means by this is that through wars historical significance to the survival and inception of this country we as Americans associate guns with freedom. Ultimately this creates a large disconnect between the realities of guns in this nation and the myth/ideology surrounding them. While this doesn't directly correlate with why teens are turning into mass murderers it does explain the inherent backlash talks about increasing gun control surrounding these events.

Sadly, committing suicide is very common with teens today in the United States. There are many teens going through troubling times that don’t know how to cope and thus resort to taking their own lives. This very important topic needs to be addressed. Suicide is the tenth cause of death in the United States and is also the second cause of death for people between the ages of 15-24. More lives are lost by suicide than any other cause not including heart disease or cancer. U.S. teens are struggling with this issue because they believe that their situation is hopeless and see it as the only way out.

serious, causing a number of problems in a person’s life and their bodies can completely quit on them and kill them. Low self-esteem and body image issues don’t always result in developing eating disorders. It can also make a person think badly about themselves and eventually take their life. For example, Rosalie Avila from California committed suicide after being bullied because of her looks for two years. Her father said she was always happy, but he knew something was off about her. Rosalie carried around a journal with names of those who used to bully her and often cut herself. She wrote an apology letter that stated she was committing suicide because she was “ugly” and a “loser” then hung herself in the middle of the night. Her dad woke up because he heard screaming and found her hanging in her room. He rushed her immediately to the hospital, but unfortunately she was announced brain dead days later and taken off life support. Body shaming is so common in society now but is not taken seriously enough.

Suicide and depression is a widespread mental disease that is plaguing the U.S. In 2010, 38,000 Americans committed suicide, and 79% of them were men. There are many women who suffer from severe depression and suicidal thoughts, but men take their own lives more often than woman. Males kill themselves more often because of masculine culture and impulsiveness.

there was no way to end the depression except by ending his own life. Roy was even scared and hesitant up until his last moments. He did not want to leave his family, but because the only person he could seek comfort and solace from told him there was no other way, he ended his life on July 13th, 2014.

After reading this quote I can sort of understand what the mindset of the shooter is feeling and what the might think of what they have down. They did not want to kill people to show how angry of what has happened and no one want or even cared to ask the person how they feel maybe if someone talked to the shooter before what was going on in their life maybe he wouldn’t even consider killing people because he’s mad or socially alone.
